The people in the Quadra Island Climate Action Team have decided that one big piece of the answer is to use food on its way to being wasted to …feed everyone. Sounds obvious doesn’t it? Well great ideas often are. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions by stopping food going into landfills and leaving as methane. It lowers the amount of carbon burned in transporting it to the landfill and since there is less waste less food is needed to be transported onto the island. These folks are taking care of each other and their animals and the land. People will have more food security and they will feel cared for.

Fun fact! One million tons of food per Canadian  is wasted every year! Aack! 60 percent of our food! Generating 57 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year!

So how to feel better? Science tells us that the best cure is doing something that matters and feeling part of a community. Boom 2 for 1 by the Quadra Island Climate Action team.

You get to be a hero too. Tell other people about this story! Sure you can share the March 15 National Observer piece (by the way if you don’t have a sub you should get one – good journalism isn’t free) but the best thing you can do is talk about how awesome Ramona Boyle and her daughter Natalie and neighbour Dood are for taking this apparently obviously good idea and making it so!
